Ask a Nutritionist
What are turnips and what are their health benefits?

Turnips are root vegetables like potatoes and radishes. They are rich in vitamin C, which is important for our immune health and wound healing ability. You can store the turnips in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Ways to incorporate turnips in your meals include pickling, roasting, sauteing, and eating raw with salad mix.

Check out two recipes below for the ReFresh online cooking class (don’t forget to sign up via the previous section):

Recipes We Love

  • This roasted potato recipe is quick and easy. Flavoring foods with herbs is a great way to reduce salt intake.

  • This pasta recipe is rich in different plant compounds from different vegetables. Using vegetable-based pasta sauce is a great way to increase vitamin and fiber intake.

This week your Refresh bag will include many of the following delicious fresh and staple items:
  • Turnips and green chile from Viva Verde Farm*
  • Apples and pears from Synergia Ranch*
  • Potatoes from Simple Revolution Farm*
  • Butternut squash and fingerling potatoes from Rodriguez S & J Farm*
  • Eggs from Monte Azul Farm*

Thank You!

Special thanks to all of the farmers and food producers working so hard to feed our communities; our partner organizations who helped to recruit ReFresh families: Kids Cook!, YES Housing, Together for Brothers, SWOP, Centro Savila, Street Food Institute, and Mandy’s Farm; to the staff, volunteers, donors, and ReFresh families who make the program work, and to our partners at MoGro Mobile Grocery, who pack these beautiful ReFresh bags each week for us, and who do so much important work connecting communities to healthy food throughout New Mexico. There would be no ReFresh program without all of you – we love our partners!
