What can green chile stew teach us about success? Meet Joseph Romero, Chef at Three Sisters Kitchen.
Today he keeps Three Sisters Kitchen running smoothly, centering joy and connection in the kitchen and celebrating Indigenous ingredients and cooking techniques. But throughout his life, he’s realized that the idea of success he was taught wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.
Growing up, the experiences Joseph's family had with poverty impacted the way he saw himself and his circumstances. Poverty limits our potential in so many ways. It keeps us hungry and distracted with the stress of just trying to make ends meet.
"I realize now there weren’t a lot of people telling me that I could succeed in life,” Joseph shares in his Nutritional Values booklet. “No one was telling me that being poor didn’t mean that I was hopeless, or that money wasn’t everything - that my family had other resources that mattered too…There are so many other ways to be rich or successful that have nothing to do with money."
