About Nutritional Values

What are your nutritional Values?

Food Can... What do you believe that food has the power to do?
My nutritional values are... What values nourish a healthy community?
If I am what I eat then I am... How does what you eat celebrate your identity?

Nutritional Values is a project that celebrates the complexity that shows up on our plates, celebrates the stories we all have to tell, and creates opportunities to have conversations about what we hope and dream for our communities, as we share meals around the table. As a partnership between five community-based organizations who care deeply about community, relationships, power, and justice, we are excited to share these stories with you!

Nutritional Values Group Photo From A Video CallNutritional Values was created from collaborative food storytelling workshops led by Three Sisters Kitchen with Centro Sávila, Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women, Encuentro, and Together for Brothers. Together, we shared food memories and traditions as a way to think about the root causes of poverty in New Mexico; to explore the damaging and inaccurate stories we tell ourselves about who is poor, and why; and to envision community-based solutions to poverty in our state.

Dig in. Savor the stories. Chew over the meaning and reflect on your own nutritional values. What nourishes you? What will it take to nourish our communities? How can we address the root causes of poverty in New Mexico to create the healthy communities we all deserve? How will you join the conversation? We are excited to explore #OurNutritionalValues together!

Support for the pilot of Nutritional Values came from the Voices for Economic Opportunity Grand Challenge. Launched in 2019, this Grand Challenge seeks to address the persistent toxic narratives about poverty in the U.S. by elevating diverse voices and broadening the national conversation about poverty and economic mobility. Support for this Voices for Economic Opportunity Grand Challenge project came from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. As a Grand Challenge grantee, this project also received support from the Voices for Economic Opportunity Incubator, a new model for narrative change and social impact built and led by Purpose. This project was also funded in part by the Academy for the Love of Learning.
